a little slice of country life in the city

wahroonga ...the gorgeous leafy Upper North suburb, is an aboriginal word meaning "OUR HOME" which fits beautifully with its suburb brimming with residents prioritising family life as Nos. 1 on their list.
Just the way it's meant to be.

Once the wahroonga train station opened in 1890, it became a place appealing to city folk wanting a little slice of country life.

With the North Shore line so accessible the city is approx. 30 mins away making it a town destination in its own right.

Cottage gardens in abundance

Established in the 1800's the
area became rich in orchards.

White picket fences

One of the original farming families was the GILLESPIE family. I am lucky enough to live in their original homestead, originally called UPTON GREY.
Robert Gillespie (pictured) became the President of the North Shore Boys' School now known as KNOX. He served the school until his passing in 1945.

Quality of life remains peaceful, home-grown, filled with family, friends and baked goods. Small businesses are taking care in their ventures and wahroonga continues to grow in spades. Take a little sneak at some of my favourite stores...

GROSGRAIN HOME
http://www.grosgrain.com.au

Just walk in there for the feel good factor alone. A hidden gem of a store filled with "I wants" galore. Ask to see Lisa or Alex.
I never leave here without anything but a smile on my face and a bag filled with treasures.

GRANNY SMITH NATURAL FOOD MARKET

OK..OK..not exactly Wahroonga but only a 1 minute drive away in adjoining suburb Turramurra and most definitely worth a mention. Local produce sourced from the farms of Dural and beyond. Our own little farm shop filled with organic fruit and vegetables owned and beautifully organised by the gorgeous pair Peter and Jamie.

BERTRAND'S CAKES
(02) 9489 3192.

Authentic as they come. Bertrandt is from Brittany in France and bakes fresh daily. He has been baking his delicious delectables for wahroonga for fourteen years now. with Christmas coming at as faster than a train on the North Shore line, this is one to mark down as MUST visit for all your Xmas gingerbread houses, cakes, puddings and more. All made on-site with no preservatives or nasties.

FLOWER INFUSION

A boutique flower shop with personal care.

Wahroonga Park
As I ask my boys to go check for eggs from our own organically fed chickens in the back yard and feel enveloped in a calm of green nature, I look at the time and think it may be time to go outside and pick some roses from the garden for the weekend before I rustle up my kids for a bath in the same house the Gillespie children bathed in in the late 1800's. I thank the stars every day for bringing to me to this little piece of heaven. wahroonga is a pretty wonderful place to be. :)

MARTYN LAWERENCE BULLARD VISIT TO AUSTRALIA

I had the absolute pleasure of sitting through Martyn's Seminar at the Trade Fair last week in Sydney.

A very humorous and tell it how it is kind of a guy who I warmed to immediately.
Trend forecasts advice was to look at the designs walking down the Runways at the moment. Strong link to fashion, as always, but more predominant now. According to MLB, ORANGE is the colour of the moment.

Spoke of the issues that arise between a client and a professional designer on a job when hourly rates are in effect. HIs words were that,
it simply causes contempt.

Working with a one off fee, calculating on a per square footage rate plus mark ups on design elements seems to be the way to go.
